In his seminal 1972 book Suburbia, he documented the places where America lives, celebrating the ‘burbs and their residents with a patriotic delight … while maintaining an ironic distance that keeps his work relevant today. He’s won a Guggenheim fellowship and a pair of NEA Grants and has recently received newfound appreciation thanks, in part, to director Sophia Coppola’s rediscovery of his work. Recently, LIFE spoke with Owens about how he made these photographs and what he was thinking at the time. (All the photographs run with their original titles from Suburbia.)
